Reno RV Rendezvous 2014

Mike S

Senior Curmudgeon
Well, Greg mentioned it in this thread, so I guess it is time to get the ball rolling with a dedicated thread, not just a side note at the bottom of a post elsewhere.

Who is planning on going to the world famous R3 BBQ????

Laura and I will be going.

We will be there!

Kim and I will be there and we are bringing Jim Kiloh with us for his first time at the Reno Air Races. We we will see everyone at the BBQ after the races on Saturday.

pit pass?

The first post with the link to the threads with the map for R3 and the BBQ looks like the hanger is in the Pit area. Will we need a Pit Pass on Saturday to get to R3?

Won't need a pit pass after racing has finished (at least that has historically been the case).

2014 RV3 BBQ Official Word

Guys/Gals: It is that time of year again where we should get the ball rolling on our annual party for the Stead Air Races. Greg and Julia will be here this year after a 2 year hiatus building a cabin in the wilderness somewhere up in Canada just South of the Alaskan border, you know, where bears are as big as outhouses and the mosquitoes are big enough to require tail numbers. Anyway, the party will be as per usual, on Saturday, 13 Sep, at my hangar, MA-7. We will start preparations just as soon as the last race is finished, my hangar is in the "Dead Zone". Greg or somebody will post the Google picture of its location. It usually takes about 15 minutes to get the grills fired up and the chairs and tables set after the last heat. However, feel free to come help set up and drink the cheapest beer I can find at Walmart. Hamburgers and hot dogs and the fixings and cake, I like cake. We provide everything you just provide yourself. Party lasts until we run out of drinks or food or both. Last year we had over 100 people stop by; several Aussies, even a couple from Germany plus RVers from all over the country. There was a guy from Dynon who was giving us the inside scoop what was coming down the pipeline. Now, if we could get a Van's guy, iFly guy, Seattle Avionics guy, a tool guy, a Desser Tire guy, a P-Mag guy, a ............ NOTE: This party is for the RV community; owners, builders, wanna be owners or builders, people who bought or built something else and now wish they had an RV, significant others of the above and anyone who can spell RV3. The secret password for entry is (RV3). Don't tell anyone. Please come and have a good time. Dan

Mike: Thanks for posting the google picture, I overlooked Bob Mills picture. At least I am now know for sure where my hangar is. Dan

Just so no one gets nightmarish visions of a zombie apocalypse…...Dan's hangar is north of the no prop turn line, which has been referred to often as the dead line. As a vector, if you find where the Sport Class aircraft stage to start engines, Dan's hangar is just west (to the left). If you watch where the racers come around pylons 7,8 and 9 into the home stretch, look down and left, and Dan's hangar is the first one you see.

By the way, he's not kidding about the cheap beer. He stocks what no one else will drink…that way it won't get mooched or stolen (there are a lot of moochers and thieves at Stead! ;)). We'll try to sneak in a little good stuff on him for this party...when he's not looking.

(Arr Vee Three…oops, is that right?) :)

Well, since you're becoming a land baron there, it could be easily confusing (Okie joke left off! :D)

Lastly, Greg is correct, no pit pass required. Lots of BBQs and parties typically happening in the pits after racing ends. Great time to walk around, see planes and take sunset pics of cool machines! However, if you haven't been to the races before, treat yourself and get a pit pass. Absolutely worth every penny to get up close to the planes. I'd say half of the show is inside the pits. Go for it (and come over and find the RVs in one of the Sport Class hangars. We'll likely be in either the main RARA hangar with the Formulas and Bipes, or in the hangar across from that one…or both!")

See ya at the Q!

Cheers,
Bob

I've stayed at the Peppermill and Silver Legacy, both nice places. I'll be at the Silver Legacy this year and will have a car if times work out for rides if anyone needs a lift from any hotel. Happy to do so!

Hi Bob,

I may make the races yet. Kindly let us know of a convenient motel to the races.

Thanks,

Pierre, it'll be great to see you, and all the gang! The Sport Class Racers typically stay at the Grand Sierra Resort. The Eldorado is the RARA sponsor hotel and will have shuttles. The Silver Legacy and Circus Circus may also have shuttles. Those last three are downtown, while the GSR is at the intersection of 80 and 395/580 (lovingly known as the Spaghetti Bowl). The Nugget is in Sparks, just east of the spag bowl on 80, and that is also where Tailhook (Hook) is held, this year on 4-6 SEP?fun week!. Atlantis and PepperMill are S on 395 a couple miles. All the above are very accessible, and an easy commute to Stead.

There are also many smaller, non-casino hotels. Hyatt Place and Best Western are right at RNO airport. La Quinta, Fairfield Inn, etc. I recommend you steer clear of anything on 4th Street?police blotter central and hourly room rental?just say no! ;)

2 weeks out!

Cheers,
Bob

I did not know.....

Wow. I have been attending the air races for many years and did not know about this BBQ! I hope to show up to meet with other RVers.

Regarding getting to Stead form downtown Reno- take the bus! Really. The metro station is near the bowling convention center in Reno. They have direct busses to the races and it costs a woppin' $1.25.

My brother Rich and I will be attending 2nd year in a row.:) I will be there all week. Anyone needing a ride from Dans back into town after I'll have my TDI wagon. Just a heads up for any western WA participants, I will be driving and departing Olympia Tuesday 9th at 0600 and returning Monday. You're welcome to ride with me. Looking forward to race week.

My son Lane and I will be there. Weather permitting we are planning on flying the RV down but are prepared to drive if necessary. Either way we'll have 2 empty seats back to the Nugget after the BBQ. (Can also drop off at other hotels.)

I'm booked in for Saturday and Sunday at the races and look forward to meeting up again.

I'll have spare seats to/from the KRNO area (Best Western Hotel) Saturday evening and Sunday morning if needed

I'll be there

Hey Guys, I will be in Reno with my RV-7 and already have pit passes, I'll definitely swing by the BBQ after the show on Saturday. Looking forward to meeting some of you I have seen on VAF over the years.

Chad, be ready to talk about my VP-X. Love it and have been using it for 200 hours now. Still have a couple questions I want to throw your way.

Looking forward to it. - Thx

I'm booked in for the races, arriving Friday flying down on a smoker (airliner) I have about 4 months before the 8 is ready to go :D . Staying at Harrahs if anyone is in need of a ride back to the strip.

I posted the info below in another thread about Sport Air Racing, and thought it might be valuable info here as well…and some more mojo to keep this thread alive for Dan and Greg, and pump up attendance at the R3 BBQ!

The Sport Class (the class RVs fly in) is running 4 heats this year, and currently has 38 entries, with a bunch of RVs! The line-up in each heat looks to produce some very competitive racing this year, with more than one group of closely matched racers in each heat. It should be a lot of fun to see!

Among all that glass are 3 Rockets, 1 S-RV or RV/Rocket (or whatever you call mine) and 6 RVs. There would have been 8 RVs but 2 have had to scratch.

Here's your Metal Mafia line-up, Rockets, then RVs, in race number order:

12 Mark Frederick F1 Rocket
17 Chris Schaich HRIII
49 Bob Mills RV-S6
57 Bill Beaton HRII

16 Charlie Greer RV-6
27 Jim Wilson RV-8
26 Scott Farnsworth RV-8
41 Kevin Eldredge RV-8
84 Stan Sutterfield RV-8A
314 Scott Prewitt RV-4

If you come to the races, look for the Rockets in the main RARA hangar (where the Formulas are), and look for most of the RVs across the ramp from RARA in the big hangar by the fence. Kevin and Scott will have their RVs in the hangar next to the other RVs' hangar with Relentless NXT and a Lancair…all in a very nice display location set up with Titan Engines, Aircraft Wraps and other sponsor displays.

Please do come and visit us…we'd love to see our RV friends there!

Qualifying begins Monday, first heats Wednesday afternoon. Full-day racing from Thursday through Sunday. The RVs and Rockets will likely be in the first two heats each day, so get there by 9 am to see the RVs fly!

"Fly Low, Fly Fast, Turn Left!"

And go to the RV BBQ!! :D

Cheers,
Bob

Reno RV Rendezvous 2014

Guys: I just did a count of the R3 sign ups and the total count is 47 as of this posting. Count on another 15 -20 local strap hangers and it looks like we will have a good attendance again this year. Did any of you notice the speeds posted by our local boy, Bob Mills? Go get 'em, Bob. Dan

Well since this race and social are now on my bucket list.
Are people flying GA into KRTS or is this place too busy.
Is KRNO a good alternate. Most talking about attending this race have talked about having a rental car but not sure if they are flying their RV in or flying commercial.

Almost zero chance of flying in. Reno, Carson, Minden, Truckee etc. are all good possibilities.
I'm coming from the Bay area tomorrow and grudgingly taking the four hour drive as the most practical way of getting there.

No chance of getting into RTS during racing. Possible with special permission very early or very late, but no place to park until Monday, at which time it will be too late! There seem to be a lot of guys driving in and out from Reno so you could probably fly into RNO and catch a ride there.

Greg

Thanks to all who made this another successful year - so successful we ran out of burgers and dogs. We'll get more next year. And thanks to those who donated either cash or food/beverage to help out.

Cheers,
Greg (and Julia and Dan and Cherrie)
