Hi All,

Quick ?: If you have one screw each in your hand, how do you tell which is AN507 vs AN509?

Color, markings, etc?

Thanks,

AN509 is a structural grade screw, AN507 is not.

A structural screw (or bolt for that matter) generally has unthreaded shank to bare the load. A non structural screw has threads on the entire length of the shank.

Will check...

Hi Scott,

I will check to see if there is an unthreaded shank on the AN509's. I didn't notice last night while sorting/categorizing through the finish kit h/w -- will verify this evening.

Thanks,

General Aircraft Hardware book

I just ordered some stuff from Aeroware in NZ and also requested a copy of the General Aircraft Hardware book. Superb reference. Surely must be available to you guys in the US?

Just Can't help it! / its GENUINE Aircraft Hardware

 I just cant help it.
It's not General Aircraft Hardware, its GENUINE Aircraft Hardware.

The book is $6.00 postage paid anywhere inside the US or FREE :) if ordered with a $75.00 order or more of hardware.

Note if you place your Hardware order on the Webstore and add the book in the cart it will show $6.00 for it, but my crew will change the cost of the book to 0.00

www.gen-aircraft-hardware.com select the category Literature the Item# is PB REF BOOK

Get em in the sky!

Hey I was pretty close!!

It begins with 'G' anyway! ;)
Thanks for the book. Unfortunately, Aeroware didn't have any of the CDs; maybe next order...
Cheers,

Your are Welcome.

Check your book, if it does not say PB5 on th spine its not the latest.
Give Lyndon at Aeroware (New Zealand) a shout and tell him to order the new ones.

The CD's are the same as Revision 4, I have hundreds left over, there never was too much interest in them. You cant just throw it up on the toolbox or wing like you can the book, and find stuff as fast, and then you still want to print the page anyway so you didn't have to leave the compuer on.

The Latest Revision PB5 has more Tools in it. We are just working up to tools a little at a time, but we did add some Riveting Tools, Threaded Drill Bits, Straight and angle drills, and additional Reamers.

Enjoy becoming the local hardware expert, the new knowledge will save you alot of time, except in the cases where there may be too many things to choose from.

Cheers,

The spec for AN509 structural screws calls for an X on the head if it's a low alloy steel screw. AN509s are not made below size #8.

If you are looking for a high strength structural screw that is available smaller than #8, there is the NAS514. They have a 125,000 psi minimum tensile strength.

I've used them in many applications in my build, especially things like fairing attachments and inspection plates where others complain about the AN507 #6 screw heads normally failing. I also used them on the fuel tanks where the wing root fairings attach and there wasn't adequate edge distance for a #8 screw.
