Sister sends text: "What are you doing this weekend....?"
"I reply: depends on the weather, there's a Pie-FlyIn at Rushford...."
Sis says: "Surprise birthday lunch for Mom's 82nd - can you be here Sunday at 11?"
Wheels turn.... Wx looks good, depart at sunrise...."Yep see you at Niles at 11!"
So we got up early, and headed to Anoka County, presents in hand. The sunrise did not disappoint!
36kt tailwind @9500ft had us making good time!
Spot the ghostly sleeping Andi over the heartland......
Nice lunch with Mom - and a family pic. Sister Shelley, Brother Chris, yours truly, and the Birthday Girl.(not able to make it, Brother Andy from Oregon.
Gets dark pretty early, so we headed home. We got vectored along the lakeshore where we spied Mt. Baldy - the big dune.... at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore
Chicago approach took us up by Dupage, where we flew over FermiLab. I woke Andi up, because her dad spent many years at FermiLab as a Particle Physicist. (he was in classes taught by Fermi at Univ of Chicago!) In the photo, the Tevatron is the big ring in the middle, and the injector ring is off to the left. KDPA is in the background.
Rest of the trip was pleasant, if not a bit bumpy. We even had a tailwind over Wisconsin. Great to see the Family - without the RV, we don't make that trip!!
