Removing Wing Connector Inserts

Due to an error, I need to remove and swap around several wing connectors. I played with several ideas but was unable to even get one removed from the blue fixture. Does someone have method to share? I used up all my connectors so don't even have one to study for a solution.

I looked at some pins in my spare parts that I believe are the type used for the wing connector. If they are the correct pin, you need to insert a thin strip down both sides of the connector to collapse the retaining tangs to allow removal.

Yup

That's what I did. Fabricated a "special tool" out of thin aluminum sheet. It ended up looking like a small pair of tweezers with really long skinny tips. Takes some patience. Good Luck!

It helps to have a set of pin extractors in your electrical tool box. They slide over the pin, pressing in the little tabs, so you can pull the pin out the back of the shell.

I have a half dozen pin extractors, they are useless for this task. I have been fighting these for hours but cannot easily get them to release. Four down now, four to go!
To preclude this ever again, does anyone know if a tool exists to make this easy?

Look at the prints, especially at the beginning of the whole instruction book.

It shows how the pins insert, from that you can deduce where to insert the release pins.

As guys have said, you may need to fabricate your own as a standard pin remover shrouds the pin, these have one or two lugs that need releasing.

The trick is not to apply pressure at all, have someone hold the connector while you wriggle. Think of when you were a kid and one Ford key fitted all cars ;-)

Take a look at the drawing of the tool (here):

If it is similar to some of the tools I have used you may be able to make one by grinding a small stainless tweezer to the approximate dimensions. Just slide it down the sides of the connector socket from the front.

Here is a photo and catalog page for the pins:

Tweezer! That was the magic word I needed! As I was grinding down a standard set I remembered the Harbor Freight Aviators Tweezer assortment for $1.99 or so, far less than the $70 for a store bought one. Grabbed them and headed to the hangar, presto, they worked like an expensive tool. I am posting here in case someone later needs to remove one of them, this is the cheap and easy way! Thanks everyone for all the help.
