Flap to Fuse Clearance 1/8"?

Van's says the clearance should be 1/4". My pre-trim clearance is about 1/8" when retracted but grows to 1/4" to 3/8" when extended. I don't see the point in trimming them to the 1/4" standard when retracted if they will swing that far out on deployment. Comments please.

would it hurt anything to go ahead and trim it so that its at least 1/4" either up or down? that way, there is no question.
