Jabiru 3300

Hi,

I'm looking for information about installation of Jabiru 3300 on RV-12.

In particular, I'm interested to see engine attach point modifications.

There are a few flying RV-12 with Jab 3300. I wonder if people modified the engine mount attach points in any way.

I know joedallas (http://joesrv12.com/) has pretty neat modification for the attach points. http://joesrv12.com/Builder%20Log/al_08_01.htm

Did anyone install the Jab 3300 on the airframe without mount points reinforcement?
If so, did you observe any problems?

Cheers

I have an Uncle in Virginia that built one. He and his son used it to get there private pilots license. I flew in it a while back. Very nice flying and smooth running. They are on here from time to time and yes there was some additional forward fuselage beef up points. Joedallas was talking a lot with them when it was in the design/construction phase so if you can get in touch with Uncle Oren you can probably learn how it was done from Joe.

His son used it in the wedding

Oleg,

As you may already know, Pete Krotje, of Jabiru North America sells complete firewall forward kits for the 2200 and the 3000. My firewall with the 2200 installed does not have the reinforcements, however, this engine/prop combination is 35 lbs. lighter than the Rotax. Although it never hurts to beef up the firewall, Pete may have some additional suggestions for you.

Thanks Tom, one correction there-- Pete didn't develop a 3300 kit for the RV-12 because he felt it would require too much reinforcement and modification of the fuselage. Of course, the 2200 is lighter and smaller, so he does sell firewall forward kits for that. (Pete is my father-in-law and I helped with the RV-12 project in 2011.)

Oren went considerably "off plans" with his 3300 powered RV-12, but his airplane is gorgeous, and from what I hear, it's a joy to fly.

Just out of curiosity, how fast does the 3300 powered RV12 fly at? It seems like it might be able to cruise above VNE with the right prop while still retaining good climb characteristics.

A friend of mine has the 3300 in a Sonex, and let me tell you, that thing goes WAY faster than 120 knots! It's a hotrod. I've also seen VW conversion Sonex videos doing high speed passes above 200mph (or knots, not sure, but either way, WAY FAST).

The 3300 also sounds awesome. Sounds like a hotrod idling.

Talked with Pete at Midwest Expo

Katie,

We talked with Pete at the Midwest Expo and he sounded like he might have had a change of heart on much strengthening to do. We are contemplating it but not to the extreme that Oren or Joe has done. The battery will need to go behind the baggage bulkhead to offset weight and the firewall will need to be beefed up at the mounting points. We will talk with Pete again before we totally commit.

Of course I think the jab 3300 or the new 3310 is a great choice for a alternate engine for the twelve.

The cowl that Pete krotje of Jabiru has designed for the twelve is for the 2200 and the 3300 engines.

I believe that Pete also thinks that the 3300 engine is a good choice for the twelve, however I don't think he wants to assume the responsibility of the mount of the engine on the locations of vans design.

This is something that we have to work out on our own.

The design that Oren and I have worked out should handle the loads that the heavier more powerful and longer arm engine will add.
( This is something each builder has to evaluate on their own ).

This is only my view and not a endorsement.

Jab 2210 & 3310

If all goes well the 2210 and the 3310 will be the new engines from Jabiru.
I think the 2210 should be out soon and the 3310 may be out in 2017

Pete would have more info on this.

jab 3310? what's that?

Slightly off topic...Joe and I are both installing new Jabiru generation 4 engines. I am installing the 2200 (note, not 2210) and Joe is installing the 3300.

Ready for engine start however I made a last minute change in propeller from wood to composite. Joe is going to beat me. I am leaving town for six weeks so will delay initial start until my return.

Joe is about finished with his very highly modified -12...a potential SnF award winner! Looking forward to his posts when ready.

RV-12 w/4 Cylinder Jabiru Engine Installed

Sans propeller, this is what the Jabiru Generation 4 Engine looks like installed. The engine is about 35 pounds lighter than the Rotax, thus the engine is mounted further forward for CG.
