Exhaust Clearance

What is the minimum clearance distance you would be happy with between the exhaust pipe and the lower cowl, bearing in mind the vibration and shaking that occurs during startup and shutdown?

If you are talking cowl exit area, whatever you can get when you have the pipe centered between the lower cowl and fuselage.

If you are talking the sides of the cowl, a couple of inches but always use heat shield on the cowl, the exhaust pipe or both.

It?s before the exit. The bracket attaching the exhaust to the muffler (Vetterman trombone) makes contact with the bottom of the lower Sam James long cowl. I?m having it modified and want to know what might be acceptable. Clint at Vetterman said he aims for 3/8?. I intend attaching Van?s heatshield.
