Baggage Tie downs

After looking at Vans quick disconnect baggage tie downs and getting sticker shock ($25.00 each), I did a net search and found a supplier that has similar tiedowns for $7.95 each.
I just got them in and they look great. They come anodized in multiple colors and I am sure your baggage floor will rip up before they break. Here is the website if anyone is interested.

Just what I was looking for!

What mount location will you be using?

Kent

Not positive yet. I am thinking of using rivnuts like Van supplies for his and get them as close to a rib or bulkhead as possible. May need to use a doubler plate due to the thin floor and side panel thickness.

just one approach

I mounted one in the center at the rear on the cover plate that goes over the elevator rod channel, puts it between the two support ribs and is easy to install. I put 2 others on the vertical members by the side of the seat backs, again easy to install and hidden by the seats.

great find!

Jim,

Nice find! Did you notice the track kits they carry? Two four foot tracks and four tie down rings for $65 bucks. good deal in my book. I'm thinking of mounting a couple of tracks on the floor and maybe even the walls of the baggage area.

I just noticed they are located just a few miles from my office! I think I'm going to go check them out in person.

Deems, what is the upholstered interior panel shown in the shots??

I know that Classic Aero is working on an interior for the ten------are you the Guinea Pig on this????

Jim,

I bought a handful of those three weeks ago to use in my baggage compartment.

It is best if you plan to install these with #10 plate nuts while building but if you didn't install them while building, here is what I'm in the process of doing:

Use #10 keyed riv-nuts. Keyed riv-nuts have a small bump on the underside of the top ring. When set, this key helps keep them from spinning. (I bought and tried both, and the non-keyed riv-nuts spin in the hole much easier than the keyed ones but even the keyed riv-nuts will spin.)

The other trick I did was to drill a dimple in the bottom of each base but not all the way through, centered between the two holes. The idea is that by putting the dimple over an existing rivet in the baggage compartment, you can use the two holes in the base as your drill guide.

Once the 1/4" holes are drilled, it is a simple matter to install the riv-nuts and screw the bases down.

I would also recommend installing the riv-nuts through both the floor and rib flange for extra strength.

Bruce,

Way back when I bought a set of the tracks to install in my -9 and never used them because of the weight. The SbS baggage compartment is small enough you can get away with just for tie-downs.

BTW, these things are designed for securing motorcycles and they are beefy.

Hey Bill,

Do you have any pictures of what you are talking about on the installation? I am at the point of putting all the interior parts in and now would be the time. OR.... you could fly down this weekend and let me LOOk at yours:D

Hope you and the family are doing well.

Here's another option (cost less)

Deems, you are the man! Or, I guess David McNeil is the man. But either way, I was just about to order the regular baggage restraint mounts when I saw your post. Beautiful. One more thing to copy from those who have gone before me!

Love this forum!:)

No problem Robert.

Go to the 2nd 11/12/08 entry on my 4th fuselage page for pictures and notes.

PS. It is hard to update the web site with a crying baby in my lap. Other than that, all is well.

No, I've grown tired of waiting on them, so I came up with this myself here's a link to some pics on the process. IT wasn't as hard as I thought. A little duct tape, some fiberglass, some filler, sanding, and upholstery material.

I'm going to dress it up with some matching leather inserts inside of the panel and a leather upholstered armrest

Credit for this needs to go to David McNeil who showed me the tip. Simple piece of piano hinge, cut, drilled and rivet4ed to baggage area, Folds nearly flush and can be hidden under carpet when not in use:

Click forward for 4-5 additional pics installed.

Out of all the builder tips I've seen over the years - that one is the best ever. You gotta send it in to Van's and perhaps Doug should also highlight on the VAF page. Bravo.

Now I just need to build another airplane...

Deems,

I was looking for something to do with my leftover hinge. Were these just pop riveted to the floor or mounted otherwise?

tie downs

Don't mean to hijack thread, but has anyone come up with a good strong cargo net to attach to these and contain baggage? Bill

Yup [LP4-3'S

Yup LP4-3's , (used the underlying rib's in the baggage areas for added strength where possible.)

Just to freshen the thread a bit, as i'm searching for tiedown ring options right now... Here's an updated link to the tiedowns on the PitPosse site. As of this posting, they are $9.95, vs. $15 from Vans, and $41 from Aircraft $pruce. To be fair, AS does include rivnuts, but still...

I just put 4 of these in the baggage compartment of my new RV-10. I also installed extra nutplates (10-32) right up under the rear seat outboard corners, so that we can remove the rear seat, move the tiedowns, and put the bicycles in there or other large luggage when we don't need all four seats.

Following a local builder, I used two motorcycle cargo nets ziptie together. For tiedown rings to hook the nets to, I used inexpensive hardware from a local marine supply store.

not really tie downs.......but

the brilliant John Horton ( my builder) I guess came up with a baggage tie inspired by the seat tracks in a Convair or something he was gutting?
Running across the floor behind the seats, and at the rear of the baggage compartment.......
a piece of 3/4" angle with holes/slots drilled in it's entire length gives almost infinite tie locations. It weighs only a few ounces, stiffens the floor, and keeps stuff from sliding forward into the flap tube. (sorry I'm no good at pics.) kinda like this

remember, your 100 lbs of baggage becomes 2000+ lbs. in a good crash decelleration.....and you don't want to be 'rear-ended' or decapitated by that VW beetle behind you ! I admit, to keep all my **** under control, I usually just use a cargo net from Princess Auto that's for quad's...probably only good for a couple G's!!!:(

Pit Posse has an E-bay store. You might be able to get them at a price lower than $9.95.

I've found you can use something like this with a single ear. I've used four of these, two aft, two forward and use bungees to secure loads with great success. My floors are screwed in so moving these around or adding more is really easy. These are probably available in the aviation aisle at Lowe's for probably a buck and a half.

Another source for baggage tie downs

I ran across this site while searching for cheaper alternatives to Van's Baggage Tie Downs (@ $15 each).

They have a variety of fittings and track pieces.
The single stud fitting is on sale right now for $3.89. and the Round single mount is only $1.79. They also have 6", 12", 24" and 48" track sections.
