manual trim cable - stupid question

I'm trying to figure out how to pass this cable through various bulkheads.

I've taken off the control head from the cable. But to nuts at the aft end of the cable and the connector remaining in front are greater than 5/8" holes I have in the bulkheads.

Seems like I should take off the two nuts on the back side of the cable, but don't want to damage the rubber sheeting that's preventing that.

What am I missing?

I believe this is a cable like the mixture (vernier), which has rubber boots to keep dirt/dust out. They are easily removed once the rod end has been removed. You can then remove the two nuts that hold the cable in position once installed at the back of the plane.

Here is a picture of my fuel servo cables, which are similarly attached.
