Oil Path

I discovered on this website (thanks a bunch to DanH's diagram) that the oil in a Lycoming 4-cyl runs from the pump to the oil cooler to the oil filter.

Oil coolers tend to make good filters as well, but they're a lot more expensive to replace...

Has anyone thought about or successfully re-routed the path, so that it goes oil pump, filter, cooler?

I thought it might could be done using an automotive style remote oil filter, placed in the oil line from the case to the oil cooler. But then I guess you'd want to run an old-school oil screen where the filter adapters go. Not sure on the best way to do it.

Or would this just be rebuilding a perfectly good watch?
