heater question

I have the Van's heater valve and am wondering if it can be installed vertically and does the heat dump side of the valve have to be vented overboard or is exiting it into the engine compartment sufficient? Also what type fasteners are used to attach it to the firewall? I am inclined to use bolts but that seems like overkill and am wondering if it could be riveted?
