Default For Rent: Garmin 400W/500W Main Software update (ADS-B)

As we all start to look at ADS-B output requirements you may think your Garmin 400W series (430W) or 500W series GPS can provide GPS position data to your new ADS-B out transponder (Garmin or Trig TT31 for example). I discovered, yes it can, but only if you have the newer software installed in your GPS that will provide the expected data feed. Mine was too many versions back.

The procedure to update is pretty simple, I'll include the Garmin instructions, but to get an idea of the procedure see https://www.bellcustomer.com/files/S...9-15-41-RA.pdf

The only real catch I can see is be SURE not to lose power mid-update, as that can leave you with a corrupted system that only Garmin can fix. I've run this on my GPS and it was pretty easy.

I have the two software cards that bring your main software to version 5.30, and the GPS to 5.0
You can see your current version by powering up your 400W/500W series GPS and look for the first text message.
Your current Main SW version must be 3.30 or newer to be compatible for this update.

Rent them from me for $50. If you are in So. Calif., you could come to KOKB and I can help you.

Just to be 100% clear this is not the NAV or obstacle data.

Send me a PM if interested.
-Bryan

Where were you 6 months ago? I had to pay a dealer $100 for the < 15 minute upgrade. So half price is a good deal.
(Just to add to your comment: If people look at their 4xxW/5xxW setup pages, and look at what formats are available for RS232 outputs, they should be looking for "ADSB+". That's what you need. If you only have "ADSB" that's not good enough, you need to upgrade the software.)

I would like to do it but my plane is at the paint shop currently so I don't have access. Might be a week or 2 before I can use it. Put me in line?? Give me a week or so and I will check back; don't want to delay return of the card...
