SL40 Distortion with Increased Volume?

Piper J3

Well Known Member
I have an early RV-12 with SL40 comm and Flightcom 403. I use a LightSpeed Zulu3 headset.

My problem is as follows:

With SL40 volume less than 50% sound on Rx is fine with no distortion or static. If I turn SL40 volume above 50% I get distortion and static. This is easy to test when listening to an AWOS. If I use Pilot ISO on the 403 everything is OK with increased volume.

On the Tx side of things the sidetone for transmit is very clear and reported reception is also clear.

Is my problem with the 403? What about dip switch settings inside the 403?

Any help is greatly appreciated?

1. Listen to ATIS using pilot headphones jack
2. Turn power to the intercom off
3. Turn up SL40 volume
Is the distortion still there? If yes, the problem is in the SL40. If no, the problem is in the intercom.

Edit: I re-read your post, I see you’ve done the test. There’s a problem in the intercom.
