Default RV-7 Ryan in Oregon

So it's finally staring to feel real. I've been wanting to build an RV since 2011 and I've actually taken the steps to begin. I'm currently setting up my shop in the garage and my Cleaveland tool set will arrive Wednesday!

I went down to Eugene a few weeks back and took the fundamentals class with Synergy Air. I learned a lot from the class and left feeling like this was something I could actually do. We built this thing:

In the last two weeks I've purchased my air compressor, and retractable hose, added a top to my tool box, built a new shelf (that the EAA tool bench I'll start tomorrow will slide under), got a bench grinder and stand and purchased a bunch of random tools with an ungodly amount of trips to Home Depot.

After the Cleaveland set arrives, I acquire a band saw and the EAA work bench is done I will be building another practice kit (in my own shop this time) and the tool box I bought on a drive down to Van's last week. Then I'll be starting the empennage hopefully by the end of the month.

A little about me: I'm an airline pilot, currently driving the Airbus A320 series. I was lucky to have the keys to a Rv-9A back in from flight instructing days and fell in love with the plane. I've been dying to build one since and am really looking forward to this adventure. The build will be happening in my two car garage just outside of Portland, OR.

Welcome Ryan! I can tell you from experience that being so close to Vans is great when you, um... need another part for some unknown reason. :-)

Thumbs up Nice shop

Nice shop Ryan! Surely beats city quarters. Looking forward to first flight 2025!

Folks Ryan was a CFI and Chief Pilot with an elite flight school in the North East. Many capable people got their wings there including a Space Shuttle Commander. He accelerated me through flight training and after my certification as a US pilot he taught me the tricks of local airspace. He demonstrated a deadstick landing in my RV which helped to overcome the fear of engine out. I still do it every two months or so Ryan thanks for great lessons.

Ryan if you ever in our woods again welcome to the RV exersise. You know where the keys are

Welcome aboard good sir! If you ever have questions don't hesitate to drop me a PM!

P.S. You are mega lucky living that close to Van's. Prepare to drive there a few times.

Mr. Vlad, this is all your fault. I intend to use your name as a cuss for the next 5ish+ years in my shop, then praise it profusely when she is airborne.

Cleaveland Tool set arrived yesterday! Unfortunately DRDT-2 dimpler is on 2.5 week backorder. This will delay construction.

Also picked up a ryobi bandsaw at home depot. i finally used my air compressor for something other than blowing air and built a stand for it. air drill performed well. Also found a good home for a piece of scrap wood that was sitting in my garage for years.

I have a couple regular C-frame dimplers, if you're interested. I'm local to you too.

EAA workbench arrived thanks to local VAF friend, saved me a build and saw his nice looking RV-7 getting close to done. (Side note, couldn't resist picking up this ACDelco mechanics stool as my grandpa worked in the tool crib at their plant for over 30 years.)

Wheels installed on workbench. Pup is interested in the shop.

Fits like a glove in her home.

The wife also got her first ride in an RV. RV grin was quite evident for the rest of the day!
