Default Cowling hinge, chapter 29

Hi,

I cannot understand in what order the following parts are to be riveted:

Firewall flange, cowling hinge shim, hinge and fuselage skin.

When I look at the picture on page 29-08 it looks like it should be from the outside to inside: Skin-firewall flange-hinge shim-Hinge. The problem with that is that I cannot se it being stated anywhere that the firewall flanges should be dimpled.

So another option: skin-hinge shim-hinge-firewall flange...

Soo?

Looking at 35-19 that is showing the same for the forward top skin, there is a great picture showing it to be skin-fw-shim-hinge.

Hope someone can confirm that it should be the same for the sides and that the fw flanges should be dimpled.

First, the firewall flange tabs need to be dimpled to accept the dimpled skins. You won't find it because it's an omission in the plans. The layup order outside in is: dimpled skin, dimpled firewall flange, dimpled shim, countersunk hinge.

Thanx, to add to the confusion was that I found a builder log with the fw flange tabs at the inmost position.

Yes I saw that too when trying to figure it out. I have found the PDF versions of the plans indispensable when trying to figure out how parts nest. You can usually find a view or two that gives good clues and zoom in for a good look.

The other one I have seen both ways is the firewall center section tab at the top. I slid it underneath the lower edge of the top skin because it seemed to fit better. I've seen several on the outside of the top skin which while I'm not sure I think now is the correct position.
