Default FREE: Partially Working Flap Motor

Before I throw this thing away, I thought I'd see if anyone wanted one of Van's overpriced piece of junk flap motors. You know the kind that gets grease packed in the motor after only 122 hours and isn't covered by any kind of warranty? I replaced mine this weekend with Pat Hatch's unit and now this reminder of poor quality is sitting on my workbench taunting me.

I recognize that perhaps someone out there may derive a perverse pleasure from cleaning it up, so if anyone wants it and will pay shipping, it's yours. Otherwise into the garbage it goes in a week.

I'll be a backup on this if that even makes sense on a free item.

Mark,

I've got you beat. My flaky flap motor died after only 55 hours. The manufacture date is 2005. And I couldn't agree more. Pats motor wins hands down. It's a beast compared to the Vans product. Advise to others thinking about installing Vans motor. Don't.

Maybe I'm just lucky, 14 years later and my genuine Van's motor is still working fine

I don't know guys I don't know maybe you need to exercise that motor more often. I have an insane amount of cycles on similar stock motor it still does the job. It slows a bit in a very cold winter but never let me down. Only once I couldn't extend the flaps due to residual water turned to ice and glued flap to the wing skin.

Vlad, you may be on to something. My motor wasn’t initially used until 2016 when I first flew. Quite a lengthy build time. So the actuator motor sat idle for ~11 years. I’m not an engineer but 55 hours is sad for a product to fail. That being said, I stand by my decision to replace the unit with a much more durable actuator motor with the added benefit of the internal position sensor. In my opinion, Pat has a superior product.

Now that I'm flying this motor will be seeing much more use.

Is this vitriol really necessary?

The Van's flap motor on my previous RV-8 was still working fine when I sold the airplane last December with 1938 Tach hours on it.
