Gear strength/Oversized tires

As a previous 8 owner, I had the larger Desser 3.80 tires for rougher fields, but still wanted an even larger tire.
Long story short, Im looking to purchase a RV7 and selling my C185 (I don?t fly it as it?s breaking the bank in avgas!) and still want limited unimproved strips ability.
First, has there been anyone out there who has installed a bigger tire? and second, I?d like to hear any gear strength comparisons between a 7 and 8. The gearbox on a 8 always seemed a dubious weak area for rougher strips...

Your previous -8 came out of a condition inspection yesterday and the gear bolts did not need to be tighten. That's after an additional 220+ hours since you owned it and 200+ ham-fisted landings.
