GPS Antenna cable length question

Saville

Well Known Member
Hi all, I was thinking of installing a GPS puck in one wingtip. To do that, of course, requires that I run the antenna cable the legth of the wing and into the fuselage.

What, if anything, are the effects of cable length on GPS antennas?

I also have a Stratus external GPS antenna I was thinking of installing in the wing tip as well - in the hopes of not losing GPS lock when pulling loops. It's a small thing - about 8 inches long. Would the cable run cause the antenna signal to deteriorate?

thanks

I think the answer depends on the equipment in question. Some, like Garmin and the Stratus ESG require at least 10 feet of RG-400/142 so, you'd likely be okay. They have limits in their install guides on how much dB drop is permitted.

I'd recommend RG-142 (solid core) for the longer runs, as long as you can maintain minimum bend radius.
