When retrofitting a 430 into an existing aircraft, is it common practice to split the altitude encoder output to drive both the 430 and the transponder? In this case, the encoder is a grey code style.

I prefer to replace it with a serial encoder, but yes you can split it off for the 430.

You need something like an Icarus 3000U serializer.
splits the grey code to: grey code + serial code.

try avionicslist.com used ones on there and save 1/2 off

True, but you can likely get a brand new ACK A30.9 encoder with dual 232 outputs for less than the cost of the obsolute Icaurus 3000 and have one box instead of two.
