Default SL 40 - replacement option

Bummer, the Comm Radio SL 40 has bit the dust (suspect power supply), and Garmin now wants a whopping $800 to repair same.

Any thoughts on a user-friendly replacement option, without a lot of panel mods ? Other repair options ? - Mike

Jeeper,
I think repairing it might be your best option. A nice used SL40 seems to be going for more than $800. It will certainly start to add up if you start rewiring your radio stack to accommodate another radio. My thought would be to repair yours or try and find a used SL40 for cheap. Remember yours will come back with a warranty after it is repaired.

As I recall, there are two (?) fuses in the SL-40 that should be checked before sending it out for repair. One of these fuses is somewhat hidden internally and is often overlooked. Perhaps someone on this site can provide more detail?

Default SL-40 Replacement

You can get an Icom A-210 to slide directly into a SL-40 tray without any wiring changes if you have the Icom retrofit radio back plate. Easy to swap with the original radio back with the retrofit SL-40 radio back plate. There is directions online to make the change.

The Icom part number for the back plate is MB-113. The retail price was $75, just to give you an idea what it is worth. These are not available from Icom anymore as I had called them when I was given an A-210 last year. I asked here and found one. Ask and see if anyone is willing to sell you one if you find an Icom A-210 cheap. They came with the radio, and if someone installed theirs with the Icom rack, they might have theirs laying around somewhere.

It is not the best radio, but it will work for you application.

You also might find someone in Europe that has a SL-40 laying around when they swapped it out for a 833KHZ radio.

Here is someone who has the back plate and is willing to let it go.

Good luck.

I plan to swap out my SL 40 with a SL 30 very soon - to add VOR/ILS/LOC. Let me know if you are interested.

I have the GTR-200 and it's the same panel size as the SL-30 and SL-40 and is an amazing radio with a built in 2 place intercom. For the price it's the best deal going for an experimental/LSA aircraft and replacement for the older Garmin SL series radios in my opinion.
