I use APRS (but requires a ham license, which I have - pretty easy to get) for tracking in most places, but doesn't work well or at all in some places (like northern BC where I spend summers). I also have a 406 PLB for emergencies, and we recently purchased an Inreach. I think the Inreach is a better deal than the SPOT for reasons already cited above. Emergency subscription in the US (but works worldwide) is only about $15/month.
