Last night I was pretty excited to start attaching
the horizontal stabilizer to the fuselage on my
-6A QB kit. After getting everything lined up, level,
etc. I was set to drill the holes but found that I
don't have enough edge distance!
The problem is that HS-614, the 1x1x.125 angle that
exists across the front bottom of the horizontal
stabilizer spar, has been relieved a bit too much
by the factory. There is a relief cut to allow
it to bend back to follow the main spar, and this
cut is right at the angle and is approximately .125
wide. This leaves me 5/8ths of an inch of material
across, but I need 3/4 of an inch to satisfy edge
clearance for the AN3 bolts.
The plans show this cut, but the plans do not show
it being nearly as long as what was done to the QB
stab. On my factory built stab, this cut extends
approximately 3/4 of an inch inwards.
I'm going to call Van's later today and also see
if I can get a tech counselor to take a peek, but
I'm curious if the experts here have seen something
like this before. The -7 being built next to me
doesn't have a cut in the angle like this, although
the structure is otherwise extremely similar.
Thanks for any thoughts/advice/comments!
