Aileron Gap fairing

I need some advice. I will be installing the aileron gap fairings on an RV6A quick build. There are doublers under the aileron attach attached with 470-round headed rivets which "get in the way" so that the fairing does not lay flat against the rear spar. There is also a step onto the doubler. What has been done to the fairing in order to get it to lay flat?

It lays down nicely over the doubler

On your rivet pattern, plan a rivet about 1/2 inch or so before the gap seal steps up onto the doubler. For 470 heads on the doubler that are in the way you drill out a clearance hole in the gap seal to fit over those rivet heads. Then a final rivet through the seal and the doubler to secure the end of the gap seal that is sitting on top of the doubler.
Here's a picture of mine.

You also cut out a slight curve on the end where it needs to clear the aileron attach bracket.

Thats what I did

It's been years but here is what I did.

After the 470 rivets are bucked, tape the fairing very carefully in place all around.

then I utilized a very small ball peen hammer on the flat side by tapping where the universal rivet heads leaving small marks on the back of the fairing. That is where you will be drilling in the fairing.

It is a bit tricky ;)
