Thunderbolt engines?

Does anyone have any first hand knowledge of the thunderbolt engines? Are they essentially an answer to the Superior clone?
Any thoughts on whether they are worth an extra $2-3K or so?
 
I also find it interesting how the premium for the thunderbolt upgrade is so variable between engine models? Anyone who talked to the lycoming guys have a list of their options (engine colors, other mods etc).
