All, I was recently flying with my former hangar-mate, Splinter (RV-8A, RV-3), and we used flight following to Harris Ranch (3O8) from Rosamond Skypark (L00). I was squawking 1200 when I called ATC for advisories.
They gave me a code of 7726 which I immediately put into my Transponder...starting with the first knob then the second, third and fourth knobs.... bad idea as Splinter pointed out...
After selecting the first two numbers, I was squawking 7700 for an instant till I put in the third number..... I apologized to ATC for the 'alarm' I may have momentarily caused...
If you are ever given a 77XX code, start with the last number and work backwards

Keep poundin' them rivets because it's ALL WORTH IT!!!!
PS: I can think of one other time in 4000+ hours that I was given a 77XX code to squawk...
