Aeroshell 6 formula change

I heard that the formula for AeroShell 6 has changed and it is kind of runny to the point where it is starting to leak out of constant speeds. Anyone else heard of anything like this?

Aeroshell 6

Yes, I investigated this last year with phone calls to Sensenich and Hartzell, and they confirmed it, although this formula change occurred 1 or 2 years ago. I was having grease leak from the hub of my Hartzell CS propeller after annual inspection in July and thought the formula change might be the culprit. However, I found the problem to be a grease fitting stuck in the open position in the hub. Cleaned the fitting and stopped the leak (the logbooks showed that the grease being used was Aeroshell 5, anyway).

I switched to Aeroshell 5. I could not keep the oil content from running out of the open Aeroshell 6 tube while stored in the grease gun, after which it wouldn't pump.

And I thought it was just me. Tanya: "Scott, what is the grease gun doing in the fridge in the hangar?" "Uh..."

NYCO GN3058 Grease is now being recommended by Hartzell for props being overhauled, resealed, etc per their service letter that came out on Jan 6th. Service letter HC-SL-61-366

The service letter goes on to say basically keep on using the grease that you have been using until the prop is disassembled. And that all new props coming out of the factory will have the new Grease.

Can anyone confirm that it?s okay to mix Aeroshell 5 and 6? e.g., switch from 6 to 5 without cleaning out the hub.

(1) A label is normally applied to the propeller to indicate the type of grease
previously used.
(a) The same grease type should be used during re-lubrication unless the
propeller has been disassembled and the old grease removed.
1 It is not possible to purge old grease through lubrication fittings.
2 To completely replace one grease with another, the propeller must
be disassembled and cleaned in accordance with the applicable
overhaul manual.
(2) If different grease types are accidentally mixed, the propeller must
be disassembled and cleaned in accordance with the applicable
overhaul/maintenance manual within three months or 30 flights whichever
occurs first.
(a) EXCEPTION: Aeroshell 5 and Aeroshell 6 greases both have a mineral
oil base and the same thickening agent; therefore, mixing of these two
greases is permitted in Hartzell propellers.
WARNING: WHEN MIXING AEROSHELL 5 AND AEROSHELL 6
GREASES, THE AIRCRAFT MUST BE PLACARDED
TO INDICATE THAT FLIGHT IS PROHIBITED IF THE
OUTSIDE AIR TEMPERATURE IS LESS THAN -40? F
(-40? C). AEROSHELL 5 GREASE MUST BE INDICATED
ON THE LABEL.
