Nope, I would have no problem doing this. Obviously if you drill a ring out too much you would compromise it mechanically. What you propose sounds fine to me.

I also agree with JDA BTR on Digi-Key. When I was wiring my plane, I just bought 100 ea. of #6, #8, #10 rings in various wire sizes. Maybe that was overkill but OTOH, I didn't have to stop what I was doing and wait a week for a lug that I didn't have.

I drilled my ring terminal too for the same reason.
