Which Starter

I purchased a low time IO-360 A1A angle valve. The engine has the stock prestolite starter. This starter will not work with the stock mixture brackets. I was wondering which starter people are using that will work will minimal or no modifications to the brackets and horizontal induction.

Thanks
Mark

My IO 360 parallel valve had the old prestolite. I replaced it with the Sky-Tec NL High Torque In Line. http://www.skytecair.com/Lycoming.htm . It fit good for the horizontal induction set up and it starts the engine great! Not flying yet so dont know about longevity. Its a little heavier than the lightweight but draws less amps and produces good torque.

It also handles kick back better than the lighter weight model that Van's includes in the FWF kit.

I had a Sky Tec and it gave up the ghost. I replaced it with a B&C starter and it seems like a more substantial unit, although the Sky Tec on lasted about 750 hours. I have horizontal induction and the B&C is a little bigger so it takes up a little more room and you have to modify the fiberglass snorkel a bit.

Long and hard deliberations led me to get the Hartzell E-Drive last year at Osh. Essentially the same price as Sky-Tec, and (at least on paper), I liked its kickback "immunity" and cranking specs more.
