I'm filling my buck list item this year and flying my -9A to OSH with my 86 year old dad. He received his pilot's license in 1954 (and likes to tell people his instructor was "Wilbur....someone... Wright I think") Anyway, We're making the trip out there into 2 nights but thought we'd spend a few extra days on the way back meandering around to see some sights. The Black Hills and Mt. Rushmore is on the list as it is pretty much on the way. I would love some suggestions for places to see, stop and discover along the way from OSH back to LHM (Sacramento). We'll try and include as many as possible and hopefully have some interesting videos to share afterward.
Thank you in advance,
David

2 years ago I did the trip via Bryce Canyon, then to West Yellowstone - camped on the airfield camp site for 2 nights, rented a car and had a good tour of Yellowstone. Departed in the morning with steam rising from the ground in the still morning air, quite a sight.

Via Mt Rushmore to Rapid City. Devil's Tower is not far away too. Then off to OSH.

Coming back I stopped at Leadville, but had a long walk to the hotel as the FBO had closed and there was no phone reception.

Another stop at Wendover (Bonneville salt flats), courtesy car and half price lunch voucher at the local casinos just over the state line.
Then back to the Bay!

Hormel SPAM Museum

Consider a tour at the Hormel Spam Museum, located at 1937 SPAM Blvd., Austin, Minnesota. Its right off the I-90, only about five minutes drive from KAUM using their courtesy car. Can't say enough good about the owner operator of the small FBO at KAUM. Great guy, hangar overnight and a really nice facility.

We stayed at the Days Inn and ate at the Perkins Restaurant. This was because of a diversion due to TSRA in our path over our intended stop which was Portage (C47) Wisconsin. Luckily the hotel there refunded us. Heard lots of good about Portage as a stop. Hope to get there some day.

Sturgis, home of the big motorcycle rally looked really nice from the air, so did the Devils Tower but you have to stay a ways back. Still a very unique site from the air. The Badlands...

Looking forward to the report.
