Flying up for Reno Air Races

Haven't flown up for the Races so we're looking for input.
Places to stay for race weekend, which area airport to fly into, cool B&B or hotel during race weekend etc.

Cathy & Skip

This will be my first time to Reno Air Races so I am not necessary the one to take advice from.

Circus Circus had an ok rate so I am staying there. Will be arriving RNO by renting an airplane with 100+ others on Thursday. SouthWest had the schedule that fit me the best for less than 1/2 what AvGas would have cost me in the RV.

If Skip and you stay at Circus Circus, we can all use my rental car.

Personally I'd avoid Reno International as they don't seem very GA friendly. I don't remember the exact costs but they had some expensive charges; tie down, convenience, etc. Last year fuel was $7.03 a gallon.

We flew into Carson City and got a rental car. Hertz will deliver cars to the FBO. (El Aero) Fuel was $5.37 a gallon.

Biggest suggestion on the rental car is to reserve now. (you can always cancel) They'll really stick it to you if you wait until September.

Laura and I have stayed at the Nugget for the last few years-------most likely will do so again this year. Shuttle bus picks you up at the hotel, and delivers you to the races almost at the entrance gate. Return trip is mirror image.

my 2013 experience......fwiw

we booked kind of late, after getting race tix early, thanks to many suggestions here!
we found the southwest airlines/hotel package was the best deal ( out of Vancouver BC).....we ended up at the Peppermill. our first room was above the casino, which was waaaaaaaay too smoky for our virgin lungs. The switched us to one of the few remaining suites in the new tower; MUCH better. not connected to the casino HVAC.
( note: when something like this happens, get the NAME of the person who gave you the upgrade!....they tried to charge us when we checked out...luckily I remembered the manager on shift who authorized it!)
IF you are getting a car, the location is not as important. we did 3 days without one, used the hotel shuttle, and transit to the races, which they have pretty darn well figured out.....then the last 4 days toured around, hit Virginia city, Carson, Tahoe etc....which we found really worthwhile.
I bought pit passes for every day, but really, unless you want photo ops first thing in the morning, you can just wander the pits after the races for free each day; there was plenty of eye candy then for me.
Open Grandstand tix were great, but for Sat & Sun, I wished I had reserved right at the very top, so there would be some shade on my neck from the banners they put on the fence...plus you can stand up and get some good photos of the starts without anyone behind you.

Lots of regulars on here who can give better advice!

Carson City

Looks like it will be Carson City and either Circus Circus or Western Village Inn at The Marina. Either way I guess we'll grab a rental car at Carson City airport.

Thanks for the tips, see you there Condor.

I've been attending every year for the last 10 years or so. 9 of those years I've flown into Carson, and the other time I went to Truckee. I usually stay at Circus Circus.

Rental cars are cheaper at Carson. You can rent directly through Avis, Hertz or Enterprise with KCXP as the location and the car will be available at El Aero (great little FBO). At least that was the deal last year. My preference is Avis. Up until a few years ago, Enterprise was the only choice at the airport and they started price gouging during air race week, which was really bogus. Then Avis showed up with much better rates...

This year I'll be flying directly to Stead :D (Race 80)
