Important tip: Adjusting your APRS audio level

Hi ya'll,

So today I flew to Shelter Cove CA for lunch. In the process I flew over Alen's house and he happened to directly hear my tracker. Here's what he said:

I listened to you fly over Mendocino County today:)

Your TX audio is way too hot. The waveform is flattopping. None of our I-gates decoded you.

Sounds like a Byonics MT?. It will track better if you turn the TX audio down by about 1/3rd. I think the MT has a blue pot to turn down TX deviation. You can set it while listening with a second receiver.

Also the TX delay sounds like about 500ms, way too much airtime. A TX delay of about 120ms is plenty. You can cut your airtime in half by cutting the TX delay and setting the status comment to go out only about once every 10 position packets.

Your RF/antenna pattern seems good, since I could hear you direct over 30 miles either side of Ukiah.

here are some helpful links that might help:

This is what your audio sounded like 3:30 minutes into the video.

Happy trails:)

I'll definitely take his advice to heart. In fact, following his links I found an article which included a great HOWTO on setting the audio signal level:

If you just 'installed and flew' you are probably missing out on much better coverage by just adjusting that pot.
