RV-8 Time Traveler

Had my first opportunity for RV Time Traveling this week. 600 miles from south Florida to North Carolina in 3 hours and 27 gallons of 100LL (same on the return flight). Couldn?t of gone much better for my co-pilot wife?s first distance ride to her family reunion. Smooth, cool air around 10,000 feet, some left and right around clouds and a safe first time landing in the mountains. Being a south Florida guy, pattern altitude is almost always 1000 agl and msl. We landed at Transylvania Community Airport, 3NR3, run by a very nice and helpful manager, Randy Baggy. It shows as a private field, so I called Randy about a month ago and he said sure they?d love to have us visit. They have a video on their web site that instructs on the correct way to take off and land to keep the neighbors happy. Randy was so friendly and welcoming, as he says ?I have 100LL in my blood?. We hope to visit again.

9 gallons per hour?

Too rich for my blood especially on 100LL.

Have you experimented running lean of peak?... I can make 160kts at altitude on 7 gph with Avgas or 7.5 to 7.7gph on 10% ethanol.

Bud, sounds like a nice trip and a fun airport!

and 22+ mpg sound nice too for that speed !

9gph at 175kts TAS sounds awesome to me.

Personally I built a fast plane to fly... FAST;)

3 hour flight minus 15kts makes me still almost 50 miles away in the same time period.

To each his own

Yea Frank at altitude I'm burning about 6.7-7.0 gallons per hour and still getting 170 knots TAS. I intentionally did long rich climb/descents. It cost the two of us about $300 round trip, no TSA, no shampoo Zip-Lock Bags, yes pocket knife, moon shine and pistol.

We're ready for another adventure. Grand Cayman? Marsh Harbor? Newport RI?
