Cowl Hinge Shims

Do you still need shims under the hinges on the fuselage for attaching the cowl? My drawing shows 0.020 shims under some of the hinges but when I measure the thickness of the fiberglass cowl and the thickness of the flange on the fuselage both are 0.060, so seems like no shims are needed. Is this right?

I'm thinking perhaps cowls in the past were thicker thus needing shims, but new cowls don't.

Thanks for any insights.

I used 0.25 shims on the sides and across the top with the pink cowl. This allowed room to cover the hinge rivet heads with a layer of glass and then some micro to level the cowl with the adjacent metal. Worked out well.

When I measured mine it did not require shims, so I didn't install them. But when I was finished and all was final riveted, the cowl was sitting a tad higher than the fuse skin. Some amount of shimming would have been better, although the height difference now is barely noticeable.
