RV-8 N657AR Updates

Another milestone: initial wing fitting. Van's matching of the QB wings and fuselage really paid off; overall it went very smoothly. Thanks to four of the PTK gang (from left to right): Curt Martin, Dave Pohl, Terry Kohler and Ted Gauthier for their able assistance.

I couldn't resist reinstalling the empennage. Time to set the incidence, fit the ailerons, flaps and fairings, connect the controls and check rigging before it all comes apart again. After that, the next reassembly will be the final one... but lots of work to do before then.

Note DAR Ted Gauthier?s feeble attempt to appear to have ?normal? stature. It should also be pointed out that he?s wearing a ball cap to hide his own version of ?a high and tight USMC haircut gone wrong?.

Oh I noticed all right... he's never gonna live it down, and I'll probably never hear the end of it... especially since this made the front page. It was the best picture of us all though, by far.

After getting the rigging of all control surfaces squared away it was time for the final major disassembly. I removed the empennage components, flaps and ailerons and got the wings ready for removal. With assistance supplied by Joe Kirik, Bruce Breisch, Dave Buck and Joe Fredericks I was able to get the wings removed, placed in the wing stand and stowed in the garage. Then we flipped the fuselage onto work stands so that I can install the landing gear permanently. I'm very tempted to paint the fuselage bottom while it's in this position... we'll see. Thanks to my crew for making quick work of some tricky tasks.

New blogspot entry is up, see link below in signature. Another long one, but it's got everything. It's got highs; it's got lows; it's got laughs; it's got tears; it's got construction; it's got destruction. Comes with cheese, pickles and a side of fries! NOW WITH RETSYN! GET IT NOW!!!

Two new blogspot entries up; see link in signature. One is a belated OSH 2018 report, the other is an overdue progress report. More highs, lows, laughs, tears, confessions... and pictures. LOTS of pictures. Here's a teaser:

... and before you ask: no... not a whole lot of progress since the last entry. Lots to talk about, though. I knew fixed landing gear slowed a flying aircraft down; I found out just how much it can slow progress down on the ground, too.

So... it took WAY longer than I thought it would, for a lot of diverse reasons... but she tried out her legs for the first time today.

It's been awhile since I announced it, but a couple more RV-8 blog entries are up, including getting Pitts instruction from Budd Davisson, OSH RV fiberglass workshop and my year-end update. The photos in the previous entries will suffice as a teaser. See the blogspot link in my signature.

Another milestone happened today. My thanks to Harry Manvel for his assistance and shared wisdom.

Looking good, Martin! Obviously an outstanding support crew, as well. Keep the progress reports coming.
Ref. one of your previous postings, any chance you could give us all a PIREP on your Pitts experience with Budd Davisson (down in sunny Scottsdale, I presume)?

If you click on the goatflieg.blogspot.com link below in my signature page, that will take you to the blog. Look on the right, click on December 2018 and there are two entries. One of them is a detailed rundown of the experience. If that doesn't work, let me know... maybe I can find another way to share it here.

Outstanding Workmanship

Marty:
Your pictures are great, but after having had the privilege of seeing the project up close, i?ve got to tell you that it?s probably the finest workmanship i?ve Ever seen.
You?ve got good momentum going-don?t slow down. You?re going to have a long line of friends awaiting a ride.

Thanks so much Terry. I must admit that I'm surprised every time I hear that. I figure I'm just another hack first time builder that tries to be careful. But I've heard that from quite a few people now; builders, tech counselors and DARS; all of whom I hold in high regard. It's encouraging, to say the least. I appreciate it.

I know. That's what I keep telling myself... and that's what's killing me. Started back today after a long layoff for my daughter's wedding and a staph infection. Well enough to use a respirator again, so I'm hoping to get some painting done soon.

The latest blogspot blog entry is up. Click on the link in the signature. Lots of photos, some progress, some changes, some finished parts. Here's the obligatory teaser photo. I call it "goattow".

Martin, I'm looking forward to seeing your plane at OSH. It looks like you're doing a great job. Keep grinding away at it!

Well, look at that.....

A fuselage, windscreen, landing gear, wheels and tires, tail wheel, engine with baffling, and, wait, what's that---- a human tow bar! Now where do I get one of those I wonder? Need to replace that dumbbell in the back with a tail of some sort and you will be flying in no time! :D

Looking great Marty. Sorry I missed you at Airventure this year but looking forward to seeing you IN your flying machine up there next year.

I'm hoping it will fly next year... but I'll need a LOT of practice before I'll be ready to fly it into OSH with confidence. Maybe by my second or third year of flying it... we'll see.

Martin,

You’re about a year ahead of me, so I’ve spent a bunch of time digesting your blog. Great job, btw!

Apologies if you’ve already addressed this, but I think your rudder cables are routed through the wrong holes in the center section bulkhead. I’m still fixing screw ups the previous builder did to my RV-8, and this was one of them. I think it’s a common error.

Here’s a pic from your blog with the correct hole circled. It gets opened up to 5/8”, but please verify both the hole position and size before proceeding. The hole next to it is for the 8A. There are matching holes in the aft center section bulkhead as well..

Here’s another build with the correct routing:

The routing is somewhat buried, but it is shown on plans page 64:

Wow... didn't catch that at all. Rats. I'll have to re-examine my build; I think I have wiring going through those holes now, and I can't relocate the wires now. I'll do some consulting, but I think my cables are going to have to stay where they are.

Latest blogspot entry is up; see link in signature panel. Shorter entry than usual, but lots of pics. Here's the teaser:

Never say never

Martin,

You can always move wires...it may take some time and cost. If your gonna build a RV8 showplane, do every bit of it right!!!

Good luck and keep the updates coming!

Don

When I finally got out to the shop to inspect the situation, it turned out to be a simpler fix than I thought it would be. A bit awkward, to be sure, but I was lucky. No wires in the way, and the pilot holes were just sitting there waiting for me. Triple check the plans, remove the floor, enlarge the CORRECT holes, disconnect the cables and reroute, install snap bushings and reconnect cables. I'll sleep better tonight than I did last night. Big thanks to Chris for taking the time to point out my error, and to Chris, Carl and Don for encouraging me to do it right. If I can ever return the favor, don't hesitate to ask.

Did the same thing!

If it's any comfort, I made exactly the same error in my build. I was fortunate that fellow builder Steve Riffe spotted it on my build log and sent me a note. Like you I was able to fix it easily because someone noticed and took the time to let me know!

Also good to check the wire bundles for clearance from the foot wells and aileron pushrod tubes.

I tried to take that into account during routing, and have additional contingency plans for final assembly if required. I know they work for the foot wells.

Latest blogspot entry is up; final one for the year, done just in time. See the link in my signature. It's a long one, so get comfy. Here's the obligatory teaser photo. I just took it a few minutes ago, so it's not actually in the blog. But it is absolutely the most recent photo of the build, and the last photo for 2019.

Funny

Yeah, that was the idea... but it was a joke photo. I included more "joke photos" in the post... some of which I can't share here. ;)

Goatfleg,
It is good you can have a sense of humor throughout the process.

Happy Thanksgiving,
Daddyman

For me, it's very true that often in life, you have to laugh to keep from crying. Especially this year. This morning I was pondering what music playlist would be good for our small Thanksgiving gathering... thinking maybe 2020 deserves Tool on an endless loop... or Rage Against The Machine...
Happy Thanksgiving to you too, Daddyman... to all my VAF friends... to all humans on earth and in space...

Hiking up my skirt again...

After cutting openings for the landing/taxi lights in the wing tips, the shop was filled with the acrid smell caused by trimming fiberglass. I thought I'd air out the shop so I opened the garage door... and in doing so, I gave the neighbors another sneak peek. I don't know why... but I just love this photo. It says so much... in the traditional "thousand-word" sense.

Very nice photo Martin! The red cowl plugs would make color balance even better.
Agreed... and they're on my wish list. But I'm at the point in the build where the amount of money I've spent on it is getting alarming... and I'm trying not to buy things until I really need them. Hmmm... maybe put a few things on my Christmas list...
