Kitplane MT-RTG Review

VHS

Well Known Member
Chuck Deiterich wrote an excellent article on using the MT-RTG in his plane for the May 2011 issue of Kitplanes Magazine. (Hamming it Up) He covered many of the aspects of using APRS in an aircraft in general, without frightening the non-ham readers with excessive APRS lingo. Included were descriptions of his use of Smart Beaconing, and the benefits to family members. It has a Googlemap course track which I think will help the non-technical family members appreciate the ease of using web-based tracking (aprs.fi, etc) I was also very impressed with the elegant simplicity of his antenna; It looks like he just used a through-hull SMA connector on the belly of his ship with a 19 inch whip. It is definitely working well! Chuck, thank you and congratulations for an excellent article!

Mike,

Byon was updating the Byonics website the other day, so it may have been temporarily invisible....you are not going blind! The RTG version we have been selling will now be called the MT-RTG NA ("NA" for North America on 144.390) The new RTG will be called the MT-RTG FA ( For "Frequency Agile" ) Besides being frequency programmable, the new version has telemetry for Voltage and temperature, and Byon is working on additional code for you guys so it will switch between configurations "on the fly" so to speak, by alternation position reports on two different frequencies, and also adding configuration switching based on altitude. aprs.fi will have the ability to display the telemetry data as graphs. It should be on the web page in a day or so.
