Control column shimming

HeliCooper

Well Known Member
I have just spent 2.5 hours trying to shim the control column to run smoothly. I have one side shimmed and torqued so it will fall under the weight of it self but I can't seem to figure out a proper shim pattern for the other side. I have tried 7 or 8 different shim patterns and most run smoothly until the nut is torqued and then there is a small amount of binding where the column will stay in place after you move it. Does anyone have any suggestions on problems that could be causing this situation or something else I could try?

Thanks

You can try some custom thickness shims. For this application, shims made of 2024-T3 sheet would be fine, so that lets you pick from any of the normal material thicknesses.

My method for custom shimming is to use a stack of feeler gauges to measure what thickness is required, then make a shim out of whatever I have available (tubing, flat stock, washers etc.).
