Drilling exhaust pipes for EGT probes

Dean Pichon

Well Known Member
Next week, I will finally add 3 more EGT probes to my -4 as I install an engine monitor.

Is there any concern about getting chips inside the pipes? I assume they will get blown out immediately upon starting, but I thought I would double check...

Is there any advantage to plumbing a Shop Vac to the exhaust during drilling?

Thanks,

If you're worried, put the cylinder on TDC with the valves closed, drill, then blow through your new hole with compressed air. The chips should come out the tailpipe.

FWIW, get them all the same distance from the flange, and oriented so the leads clear your spark plug socket.
