Airplane camping, great hiking and car rental don't usually go together. Typically two out of three. You could fly a short distance to a car rental town from these nice airports for camping and hiking: Schafer Meadows, Spotted Bear, Meadow Ck. east of Kalispell, MT; Cavanaugh Bay (not much hiking), Big Ck., Smiley Ck. ID. Smoke will be the determiner. CO may be far enough south for better air, but not much in the way of airplane camping that I know of.

West Yellowstone(KYWS) is a great place to camp & has a pilot's campground on the airport property. Safe from Bears & Bison.
They have bicycles, hot showers and are only a couple miles from the west gate.
They have a bike path that leads right into town.
Nann & I had the best of times there especially at night fireside with other aviators.

Default Options

We live in Missoula and it has been smoky but we had a nice soaking rain Sunday that knocked a lot of the smoke down. It's creeping back but not sure what it's like around GNP. You could look at flying into an airport on the east side of GNP (Cutbank, Shelby, NOT Babb or Browning!), rent a car, then drive to the east side of the park for hiking and camping. I suspect that the crowds are down in and around the park so you could find camping at a KOA or even a park campground - most of the GNP campgrounds are first come, first served. I'd be happy to chat about other options if you want. There are others.

Default changing plans

Smokey app. 2, maybe 3/wk. this neck of woods. Good on CAVU, but not on NW windy days. Yes, as stated above, Black Hills varied, many attractions. 3 airports to choose-Spearfish / N. Hills, as stated Custer, & Hot Springs, where Larry Vetterman flies his carbon Cub out of. Casinos, restaurants, history in Deadwood walking on cobblestone streets. Yellowstone never a disappointment, Jackson Hole, Tetons just So. Might be last wk. end for white water rafting, college kids going back.

Default Try Twisp Washington

If you want to make it out to Twisp WA I can set you up with a car and cabin to use as a base of operations. Also a hangar for your plane. Lots of great hiking around as well as other activities. Google 'Methow Valley' to get an idea of what's going on out here. Wherever you end up, have fun...

Default Canada?

Maybe Banff or Jasper National parks? They are not that far at all. You will have to do the border thing though, and you would have to have your passport with you.

Good luck!

I researched Banff on my recent trip and was told "emergency only" they mean it. I flew over it a perfect field it's a shame the visitors are not welcomed.
