Flaps work!

Congrats Larry. It's funny, I have almost the same video of when I got my flaps working. Similar videos of strobes, NAV lights and landing lights!

Larry, congrats. And I am not even the slightest bit jealous.

OK, maybe that was a lie, but congrats anyway!

Thanks

Thanks everyone. It really means a lot.
On to vent and fuel lines. One vent complete. Holy (Insert Expletive). There must be 20 bends in the cabin vent line. Left complete.

Whew!......60 hours of sanding fiberglass and plenum diffusers are done, I should have built an aluminum air O plane.....O wait, I am........

Nice Bret. I would love to see more pictures of your baffles. I have the James cowl and a plenum I am working on it is driving me nuts. Yours looks very nice.

Hey thanks, ya, from all the bad reports I never even considered buying the james plenum. The top is .063 2024 T3 and held down with 3/4 angle rived to the baffles, also a bolt in the center mounted to the case. I can stand on this plenum ;-) the diffusers have sheet that is riveted and blended into the fiberglass and goes back to the head, the inner sides also have sheet that goes back to the center top of the case to keep the flow going past the center baffle. someone on here once said if the first kit was the baffles, there would be a lot less RVs flying.......

I have the wet suit material installed with just one clamp on the rings, I need to get larger ones for the diffuser side, looking at how it is going to work, I think the transition will be ok.....

Been some (far too much) time since I have had an update worth sharing but...

My tanks are fully sealed!

Took me FOREVER, but I am hoping to keep the momentum going and chug along.

Leak/Pressure test in a week. Hoping for no defects.

Well done Jason!

I'm glad you made it through the tank construction alive. Not something that I'll be volunteering to got back to do in quite a while. Enjoy the rest of the build!
Tom.

Nice work

I did mine and they sure don t look so prettty. Passed the leak test but wont win awards for pretty.

Build on... we wil make it yet eh?

Dave

Congrats

Congrats Jason. Well done on the Tanks.

I am half-way through mine and its just an absolute pain to keep it clean and pretty. As long as you are leak free is all that matters.

Good to see you back on the build....

Announcing first flight of N819RV

On the morning of 4 July 2016 N819RV, an RV-7A, took flight for the first time from KGOO. The length of the flight was about 30 minutes during which no significant problems were noted.
The plane flies straight, no heavy wings, and the engine and oil temps were nominal.

The one issue that I had was the inability to lower the flaps as I was turning base. Control of the flaps did return a few seconds later and I continued the approach normally.
I later discovered that the flap problem was due to the max flap speed in my vertical power box being set to 85kts instead of 95kts.

There is more flowery prose on my blog, but that is pretty much all there is to say about it. Vans has designed one awesome airplane!

I will be attending Oshkosh but, unfortunately not in N819RV due to my phase 1 limitations. I asked for a 2000 mile phase 1 radius, but the FAA said no ;)
However, I hope to meet many of you there and show off my new RV grin.

Despite the crazy garage temps it was a good weekend for me project wise. This weekend I finished the cockpit brake plumbing!

Monday?s can be tough but I have been looking forward to this particular Monday morning! After a long period of pinching pennies I have ordered and received my new Superior Cylinders from Dart. I have all 4 but only three in photo.

Man they look pretty! I?m a happy boy!

Received my swing out cut out panel piece from Upnorthaviation.com Excellent precision work, all the Dynon end panels fit perfect even the rivet holes for the nut plates! Awaiting production of the new HDX to fill the big hole. playing with the Brother label maker, not happy with the tape look, may need to look for something different. Got my replacement DIN 12 connector for the Kannad ELT, take 2 soldering challenge tomorrow......here is my ghetto wiring job, notice the EFII fuel comp box, no need for red cube boxes, PLX O2 sensor and Fuel ratio gauge installed, Dual ECMs.....got to tie up loose wires and labeling, sat in the plane 6 hrs today, seats nice and cozy! If there are bad things you see here, (this is my first panel) please critique, Thanks, Bret

What is that finish you have used?

How did you get that effect on your panel? The diamond swirl effect? is it painted on? Machined on?

Looks great and wish i knew about the commercially available swing out as i would have gone that route instead of doing it myself.

Your wiring looks fine to me.... nice job!

3M 3D carbon fiber decal stuff, it feels real. need to find the original and not fake stuff, on the Bay.

Windshield installed and canopy fitted

I spent the 3 day weekend prepping and installing the windshield so I could then do the final fit of the canopy. All went well with the Sikaflex installation.

Next weekend will be installation of the side skirts and fiberglass to cover the gaps.

Installed the wings today, for some reason my fuel lines don't line up to the fittings on the tank?....may need to make longer ones that can do an S shape, or maybe two street JIC elbow 90s?

Finally, a place to sit. When I transfer the fuselage off of the sawhorses to a low table (a shipping crate with short legs), Karen and I will be to sit in the future N904KM and make airplane noises. :p

(No, I did NOT rivet the seat back angles over the blue vinyl...)

Splash of color on the engine

I've named my plane Pretti Penni. Today I put a splash of color on the ring gear support of the engine to be SURE I liked my color choice. Lycoming engines come in a standard boring gray color. Just because I'm building a Lycoming clone doesn't mean it has to be boring either.

Nice Bret. You have enough power up front a few pounds of paint won't slow you down. The paint itself should get you at least 10 mph faster!!

Milestone 2017

Having been building this aircraft for longer that I'd care to admit there was progress accomplished today.

Probably equal to "flipping the canoe" or being at peace with with the tip up canopy, the engine is installed.

I think I have found the tunnel and there is a faint light at the end.

Gear on!

What?s a builder to do while waiting for an A&P to answer his call for assistance in building his engine? Install the landing gear of course!

This wasn?t as bad as I thought it was going to be. The hardest part was dead lifting/cleaning the front of the fuse high enough to have my son push the sawhorse under for support.
I?ve read here before that the powder coating might be an issue when installing the gears. This is still true.

I had to remove 3/16? from the bottom portion of the left gear and 1/4? from the right to get the gears up for enough to align the bolt holes. Took a little time to remove the powder coating (didn?t want to remove any gear metal) but it all worked out well.

Now waiting for my Lisle bearing packer so I can install the wheels and tires and have a rolling fuse!

HS goes on

Last night I got my horizontal stabilizer drilled and attached to the fuselage. This is definitely one of those measure twice / cut once operations. My HS tips are within 1/16" measured to the same spot of the firewall. That took a lot of time and interrupting my spouse from catching up on Top Chef.

Initial engine start yesterday. Fired right up and ran well. No leaks! Only squawk was an inop EGT & CHT probe on the #3 cylinder (I probably swapped red wires on the EIS4000 harness -- should be an easy fix).

Getting closer to becoming an airplane :D.

Lookin Good!

I have thought to do the same thing as you in that i want to paint it all at home and then transport to airport for final assembly.

Love to hear how the trip goes. i feel that even if a few scars need fixing it will be easier to paint (and cheaper) at home where all the tools are and you dont need to rent hangar space.

She really looks nice. Great job

Any advice on how to get my cowling on like yours would be greatly appreciated LOL the thing has it in for me...

Dave

Thank you Dan Horton

The painting has been interesting for sure. Love the end result but boy what a lot of work. I went base/clear knowing that i could follow Dan's advice on color sanding and buffing. Worked like a charm!

This is the cowl after clear coating. It looked pretty good.
20170511_200130.jpg

Then I cut it with 1000, 1500 and 2000 grit paper so it looked like this
20170517_162624.jpg

Then I used the Norton liquid ice system and got it to look like this.
20170518_180305.jpg

So thanks for the inspiration Dan. I've enjoyed painting at home and especially the convenience of doing it in bits.

Cowl

Thanks Dave, I'd encourage anyone to try and paint it at home. Yes I've damaged a few bits here and there but I've learned how to repair painted parts and blend them in which is nice to be able to do.
As for the cowl it's really been a case of just trial and error. The two halves didn't fit too well so I cut off the front flange got tgem to fit perfectly and reglassed in a strong flange that fit perfectly. Lots of epoxy with lightweight fill, glass and a few epoxy skim costs to fill the weave and pin holes I must have sanded those darn cowl at least 10 times...
If I can be of help Pm me and we'll talk.

That looks real nice! how many coats of clear, and did you break through to the base coat anywhere? I did B/CC also but a little skittish to sand on it, did that once on a car and broke through a couple of places with the buffer.......is there any ridge at the color changes, that's where my fear is....

Clear

Hey Bret,
I put one good coat of clear on the airframe but two coats on the cowling because I think it'll get a little abused. Not many problems burning through the clear but I used a very soft foam sanding block and foam pads with the buffing wheel. The few times that I did manage to burn through on edges and a few high rivets I just got out the airbrush, recoated just that area, let it dry then blended it in with light sanding and buffing. No trace visible.

It really is worth while doing it if you can. Take a deep breath and go for it. My wife couldn't believe I was going scuff it all up...but now she's glad I did.

Best of luck

Simon

Engine progress...

So while out in the sticks in the land RV my engine builder sends me these teaser pics for the RV7 project. Fantastic weekend closing booster!
