Oil cooler mount

Jwputnam

Well Known Member
I have searched the forum on the positioning of the FF-709 oil cooler bracket on the 705 baffle and have come up empty handed. I have a new IO-320 with vertical induction being installed with the recommended 360 cowl.

Can someone give me a recommended height for the FF-709? Someone must know this number. “As high as possible” is not a lot of help. It is so frustrating to be stopped cold when you have just so much time to get a section done. (Had to complain a little.)

Thanks

air flow

I have the same setup on my 9A.

?As high as possible? means you want to picture the air flow through the cooler. If mounted too low, the #4 cylinder blocks much of the air flow.

I hope these pictures help:

Interesting. Thank you. It looks as if the cooler gets pretty well blocked even as high as you have it, but it must work or Vans would not have designed it like this I would guess.

It appears that your installation barely raised it above the bottom of the 705, but any higher and you would have invaded the cowls space. I get it. I will mock it up on my engine this am and build on.

Thanks. Visuals sure help.

Oil cooler mounting

Mounting the oil cooler on the firewall also works really well. I don?t have a picture handy, but the firewall mount is very straightforward. Works great in my 9A.

I have built 2 RVs a 7A and a 9 with on oil cooler mounted on the baffling and the other on the firewall. Even though I beefed up the baffle with doublets and angles I ended up with a crack by the first annual. I was able to stop drill and add more support but I was never happy. The second plane had a firewall mount and after 500 hours I am very happy. Obviously I recommend moving to the firewall
