Two 9's

Here's two 194's after another successful breakfast mission.

N194GP
N194CR

Coincidentally, we're next door hangar neighbors too, both finished within a couple months of each other.

Any more 194's out there?

N16GN is no longer flying naked!

I guess I can finally call it finished now - the paint is on with 165 hours on the airplane! Absolutely worth the wait!

I did all the work myself up to the paint part - I had SkyWest Aviation in Midland TX do that, and it came out awesome! Big kudos to Paul and Elmo over there, they did right. I still need to install the wheelpants, they were still getting some final touchup. Since these pics were taken it's already been down to Victoria twice and Houston once in support of hurricane relief efforts down there, and it's going to Reno next week for the races.

Very nice, Greg. I really like the colors and the scheme. You should be proud. I know it's been a long journey.

Awesome

Nice paint job Greg.

I'm considering an O-360 for my 9A. How has your bird handled with that engine? Any concerns about the nose wheel weight? Do you recall off hand what Van's limit is on the 9A nose wheel?

Handling is awesome, solo with mid-fuel I can maintain 2000/min off the runway, and it's still climbing 500/min at 17,500'. The nosewheel weight limit per Vans is 325 pounds, which can be an issue unless you do everything you can to move weight aft or eliminate it. I went with a carbon fiber prop to drop a few pounds up front and moved my battery aft of the baggage compartment, and all remotely mounted avionics went there as well. We have to carry those things but we can choose where we carry them. I also have 67 gallons of capacity in the wing tanks - so my CG and nosewheel considerations are different than most, but you can certainly make it work.

I realized I haven't added any pictures in this thread of my RV-9A. I was painted by Corona Air Paint back in May. Design is by PlaneSchemer, Jonathan McCormick.

The purple definitely makes it stand out from the crowd! It gets a lot of attention everywhere we go.

amazing what a little paint will do but these were really good days. so light and nimbo! bouncing on the taxiway.

New prop

Finally settled on a prop. Definitely quieter than the two-blade variants, mostly hear the engine now. After I can get some more flights in will report out on differences from two blade Catto and Whirlwin GA.

Two years after first flight, and finally got her painted!

Luke Strawbridge @ Ace Aircraft in Bartow did the paint, and I am very happy. As a side note, Luke took over this paint shop from the previous owner a year ago, who was doing shoddy work and illegally dumping chemicals. This is NOT the same company! I gave Luke a few pictures of planes I liked, and he did most of the design work. Luke is a stand-up guy trying hard to build his own business after working under John Foster in Lakeland for years. He had the work done on time (3 weeks!) and on budget. I find it hard to believe he made much money off me, but he said he really enjoys doing RV's and would love to do more of them.

The original plan was just all white and I would add vinyl decals (limited budget!). But Luke said he had some colors left over from larger jobs and would do a simple multi color paint scheme at no extra charge. The blue is actually the same blue used on Air Force jets, and it turns out I really like it. The paint is JetGlo Express, and looks extremely tough. Two year warranty on the paint.

Back from the Upper Valley Aviation paint shop

After a day of assembly, rolled Juliette out of the paint shop in Chilliwack, BC on a crystal clear November day to bring her back home! After not having her for several months it is time to go fly!
