Many of the ELT's are designed to be removed from the plane and used with a removable antenna.

The problem is that many builders mount them behind a bulkhead and they aren't accessable unless you have a power screwdriver to remove a bunch of screws.

I mounted mine to a rib under the baggage compartment floor and used big screw knobs that I can remove with one hand, if the other hand is injured.

The telescoping ELT antenna was mounted on the right side flap cover, held in place with an adel clamp and positioned so it is touching the aft spar bulkhead. My hope is that in the event of an accident, it won't slide forward and get damaged.
