SS Foil for Firewall Insulation

Stockmanreef

Well Known Member
Is 0.002 stainless steel foil OK for covering insulation on the firewall or should I use something thicker?

It seems that 0.002 is easy to come by, but I can't find a good source for .003. Or is thicker better?

Can someone direct me to a good source?

Thanks

I'm coming up on the Firewall chapters for my RV-14 build. Is there a website or youtube video that gives a good explanation of the process of insulating and protecting the firewall?

I used 0.002 SS foil on my firewall. Came out well and I am happy with the result.
You can cut it with scissors as well as a blade.
It is extremely sharp and will cut you if not careful.
You cannot drill a hole using a standard drill. It rips. Larger holes, 1/4inch and up you can cut with a knife using the hole in firewall edges as guide. Smaller holes like 1/8 inch I cut a cross into hole and then used a tapered grinding stone in a Dremel against firewall hole edges.

.005 SS

I used .005 SS Shim Stock. No wrinkled tinfoil look like the thinner stuff but some oil canning is to be expected around the areas where you attach items over it. Also a hydraulic punch works great for making nice clean round holes.
