Hello,

We are pleased to announce a significant free software upgrade for the Aera 660. The V3.30 release which is available NOW for download includes free internet weather for parts of the world that provide this data. All you need is an internet connection to enjoy the benefits of internet weather while using the Aera 660 at home and office.

The current software supports NEXRAD and METARS/TAFS over the internet, with more internet weather products coming in the future.

Here is an image taken during Sun N Fun when the weather was making arrivals difficult.

On the weather page, if you look under menu, you will see that it now supports another new weather format "Internet Weather".

Anytime you are away from the plane or are not connected to your GDL or GTX, the unit will default to using internet weather if you just leave this selection on AUTO.

For our mates in Australia, they get to enjoy these benefits as well!

And here is some weather in Norway to show another part of the worldwide weather support.

And some mixed precipitation types.

Now there even more use for the Aera 660 home dock. When not flying with your unit you can just snap it into the home dock in your house where it charges the battery, connects to WiFi, keeps the databases updated and provides a great ?weather station? showing precip and the temperature and winds from the closest reporting station.

Hello,

We plan to update the Aera 660 to support many, if not all, of the new FIS-B weather products to be introduced this year.

We expect the GTX 345 to also need new software.

Thanks,
Steve

Thanks Steve. That?s great news.

Hoping Garmin will provide software updates for the GTX 345 at Oshkosh this year.

That is indeed pretty darn cool. Looking forward to trying it on my next flight.

I think the only other thing i'd like to see is an upgrade to allow it to connect to a Stratux to receive traffic and weather through ADS-B via that connection as well.

Great Stuff!

Will the 45R units be able to get software updates from the G3X?

Internet Wx

Hello Steve

Can we expect something similar with the 796??

It will be nice..

Thanks

This is a really neat addition!

I was looking at the 660 at Sun-n-Fun. Maybe I'll have to get one.

Hmm... I was by the Garmin booth several times at SnF, but there was nothing to indicate that the 660 had such a significant new feature. If there had been signage at the booth, I really would have like to have checked out the 660 upgrade.

Garmin isn't the only offender -- BendixKing had a whole new system in their booth with no signage to indicate that it was there. You had to go look for it in a corner of their booth.

Reach out to the customer folks, c'mon, now...

Is there a subscription I need to pay to use this feature? does it really work in all of Europe?

Hello RV7ForMe,

No, there are no subscription fees. In some cases Garmin has to pay for this data, but we are not passing this on to customers.

This image shows the coverage in Europe.

Great job guys!!! That's a feature I've been wanting. I really like my Aera 660 and this makes it even better. Since I'm in the middle of building an RV I fly spam cans to stay current. Some of these have very little for navigation and my Aera 660 works great to improve these older airplane capabilities. Like most pilots my mind is always on the weather so having an Aera 660 at my desk showing the weather will help satify that need.

Thanks for all the hardwork from TeamX!

This is terrific news! Thank you. Could this data be uploaded to a G3X since we don't have ads-b weather in Europe? As In. Can I use my cell phone to give the 660 internet to get weather and have that show on the G3X? or put it there any other way?

Hello RV7ForMe,

There is not currently any way to share this data with a G3X system, but your interest is noted.

Thanks,

Import of flp-files

I would buy an 660 as soon, as it will be possible to import gpx/flp-files via WiFi from other Apps.

Wow, Garmin. Thanks for continuing internal development and listening to your customers resulting in awesome updates to the aera 660. I own three and I feel like their value is enhanced every time you add new features. Each improvement makes logical sense. And builds loyalty.

Hi Steve

What sort of coverage would we expect in Australia due to not having Nexrad.
Thanks

Hello tangocharlie,

While there are some inland areas that don't have good Doppler radar (NEXRAD) coverage, the vast majority of Australia, including all the coastal areas, appear to have coverage.

http://www.bom.gov.au/australia/radar/

This image shows precipitation probably observed by the Newcastle, Sydney, and Wollongong Doppler sites.

Thanks Steve

Just takes a long time to load.
Cheers

Hello TC,

Shouldn't take a long time to load. I have what I thought was the world's slowest DSL internet service here at home, and I can pan over to Australia and watch it load immediately.

The WiFi weather on the Aera 660 is very fast.

Thanks,
Steve

this is pretty cool, as when I fly I usually have my ipad synced to the 660. I find it easy to rubber band and look at the ipad, change any flightplan on the go. My iPad is LTE, so my question is if the iPad is LTE, will this new feature continue to update the wx en route?

thx

mk

Add the fruit

Steve
Time to add the fruit bluetooth capability to the 796 so we can get the same capabilities:D

Hi Steve,

very cool feature. I just tried to setup a mobile WiFi hotspot with my android smartphone. The Area660 can see my phone and I can enter the password but unfortunately connection doesn?t work. I get the message ?Failed to connect to AndroidAP?.

Any idea?

Here in Europe we have no other possibility to get the weather in flight but very often Internet in the air around 3000-4000ft. It would be a very great solution and adds more safety in flights!

By the way how often is it the weather updated?

Best regards
gFlyer

Hello gFlyer,

I had never tried connecting this way, but I just setup a WiFi mobile hotspot on my Samsung S5 Android phone, connected the Aera 660, and it worked immediately to update all the weather.

The weather updates are frequent enough to keep up with the availability of new data from the weather server.

Thanks,
Steve

Hi,
Im in Canada, and trying to figure out how to see the back of the VTA in Garmin Pilot for Toronto/Vancouver/etc.

In "other" programs, accessing the documents is easily accomplished. Is there an easy way to access such maps in Garmin Pilot?

I know this isn't really a 660 question, but I can't find any good resources on Garmin Pilot on line.

mk

Now, if you could require a 1 or 2 second press & hold of the "Power" button to turn the unit on, that would be appreciated. It's far too easy to turn the unit on by just brushing the "Power" button. This issue was mentioned when the Aera 660 first came out. ;)
I second this suggestion.

Garmin,

Thanks for the database "Easy Update" feature on the "Downloads" page. It makes updating all the databases very easy. Given all the gadgets we have that need database updating, the hassle avoided is appreciated.

Hello Carl,

You are welcome!

Many of us like that it is easy to turn on the Aera 660!

To protect against accidental turn-on which could use up the battery, the Aera 660 has a feature to automatically shut down after 5 minutes if it is running on battery power and left on the power up page without user acknowledgement.

We also make a great lightweight yet rigid carrying case for the Aera 660 if you want added protection.

Aera660/GDL-39 Install in early RV-12

I'm replacing my original GPSMap 496 set up with an Area 660/GDL-39. We cut the GPSMap 496 power/data cable connector off at the 496 end. I have 660 and 39 bare wire cables. We connected the GDL 39 Serial port 1 to the aera Serial Port. The 496 data out and data in were connected to the GDL 39 Serial port 2. The 496 Voice(+) and Voice (-) wires were connected to the aera audio Left and audio common wires. We were able to configure the aera for the GDL-39 and the aera to output comm frequency data to the SL 40 Comm. We were unable to get any voice out of the intercom. Would appreciate any suggestions on how to the audio alerts working. The audio alerts worked with the 496 set up prior to installing the aera 660.

Hello Bob,

You are sure going to love that upgrade to the Aera 660!

It sounds like you wired it correctly. Did you go to the Tools, Setup, Sound page on the Aera 660 and adjust the Master Volume, Alert Volume, and Message Volume and play the Audio Test?

Hint: The percent value on the Alert Volume and Message Volume are relative to the Master Volume. For example, if your Master Volume is set to 50%, and the Alert Volume is set to 100%, the Alert Volume is effectively set to 50%.

Feel free to contact us by phone or email shown below if you want to dig into more specifics.

Thanks,
Steve

Aera 660 Screenshots

Is there a way to have the photo screenshot enabled all the time with the micro SD card installed? I keep having to go into the setup pages and enable it every time I power up the 660.

Hello Oly,

Not currently. We support this setting being retained across power cycles on the G3X Touch system, but it has a dedicated button you can press and hold (Menu) to capture the screen shot and we don't have to leave a screen shot button on the display all the time like we do with the Aera 660.

Still, something we will consider. Like you, I use the screen shot capability of the Aera 660 quite a bit and generally enable it as part of my pre-flight activities.

Aera660/GDL-39 Install in early RV-12

My RV-6 friend, John, figured out a way to get audio alerts from the 660 to the intercom. He made a pigtail from a 1/8 inch female stereo cable. He connected the stereo cable Blk wire to the 660 Grn, Red wire to 660 Wht, and Yel wire to 660 Brn. We then plugged the pigtail into the existing 496 1/8 inch Audio Plug. The 660 audio test confirmed we had audio. One of my headsets had audio problems but John was able to resolve those issues as well. Well done, John!

G5 intergration with 660

Hi Everyone

What sort of integration would I get using a Area 660 and G5 together

Hi Everyone

What sort of integration would I get using a Area 660 and G5 together
Would I get synthetic vision on the 660

Any other thoughts

Thanks in advance

Hello Peter,

The G5 doesn't share attitude data with the Aera 660, but it will receive NMEA data from the Aera 660 and use it for lateral and vertical (VNAV) navigation.

I believe Australia is headed towards having their own ADS-B system, and many aircraft in Australia are already ADS-B Out on 1090 Mhz, so adding a GDL 50R which also provides attitude (for synthetic vision) to the Aera 660 (in addition to traffic and weather) wouldn't be out of the question.

If you sold your TT autopilot, used the servo brackets to install the GSA 28 servos, and installed the system below, it would be pretty great, but you could of course scale back as far as you like dropping off features including only using a single G5 with/without the autopilot.

Software version

Steve,
I have system version 3.30 but my Boot block is 2.50 as well as X-Loader. Should it be 3.0 for both? When I check for updates it says there are none available though my buddies show 3.0 for those software packages.
Thanks

Hello Paul,

The V3.00 boot block change was made to support changes in the factory and is not needed by fielded units using the V2.50 boot block and loader.

You are fine. Just relax and enjoy your Aera 660. :)

Thanks,
Steve

Hello Noel,

Thanks for the report. Hope you come out of this ok!

Just for kicks, I did a side-by-side comparison of Aera 660 internet weather and SXM weather (provided by a GDL 52 running in my house). Both are excellent.

Shorten or expand GMA 25 cable

I already have an Aera 660 with Antenna GMA 25 MCX which works well, but i need to shorten the Antennacable to 3 feet (Glaresheeld) or to expand it if i mount the Antenna on the Back of the Fuselage. Is it a problem to shorten the Cable and if i want to expand it 6 feet, which typ of cable is the best.
