ELT antenna cable routing

I keep reading about ELT antenna cable routing and antenna placement and I’ve seen more than one comment (some from a DAR) that the ELT coax should not be run through a bulkhead. However this is exactly what the plans call for - see photos below.

Where is everyone running their cables?

I could continue to run it down the c channel longeron, but just out and around the bulkheads but I’m worried the length will be too short. Any other suggestions for a better routing? Or is the plans routing fine?

Here are a couple of images from the plans:

Thought process

Consider the reasoning. You may not want it through a bulkhead because it has a high probability of slicing the antenna cable in a crash. I would offer though that those two bulkheads are pretty flimsy and likely wouldn?t be able to cut the cable. Especially since it is running along the stronger longeron. Just a thought.

Hi Gill,

Thanks for your help.

You mean run a conduit through the existing holes as per the vans instructions? Or around the bulkheads and cable tie it on?

Thanks Jon,

In any case, I don?t really feel that comfortable with such an important cable going through a bulkhead, so considering this as a solution.

I would rivet it with some AD470AD3?s, and on the face of the bracket I would rivet one of these to carry the cable and cable tie:

Just be careful how much extra routing you put into the cable. Van?s is notorious for providing just enough cable length to make it happen. An extra inch or two in routing may result in not being able to hook up to the antenna. However, I am not to that point yet. May want to consult someone who is as to how much extra length they have on that cable.
