35-08 Nose wheel assembly

We're assembling the nose wheel as indicated in 35-08, Fig. 1. The length of U-01210A-1 is such that when the nut is fully tightened there is barely any compression of the wave washers and there is no bearing drag at all when the wheel is turned.

I'm used to tightening the axle nut so that slight drag is produced from the bearings and then backed off slightly. U-01210A-1 is long enough to preclude getting any drag on bearings at all and virtually no compression on the wave washers. Can that be right?

The type of plain bearing that is in the wheel is not meant to have any axial load, so the axle bolt shouldn't ever be tight enough to induce a change in friction that you can feel.

If everything is as intended, the wavy washers should be compressed just enough to induce some friction on the inner race of the bearing so that it doesn't rotate on the shaft.

So to be clear, older version of the RV12 that have a blank page at 35-08 may have different instructions on tightening the nose wheel axle bolt.

It does, that's why we were confused by the instructions on the new 35-08. There aren't any tightening instructions there at all. Those of of us who had experience with the old one fell back to our prior experience with the old tightening instructions which simply won't work with the new configuration.
