fab and cowl clearance

I searched past post and see that my fab to cowl clearance problem is common (o-360). and I will need to make a new mount plate and move the airbox as far to the right as the filter will let me before hitting the bolts that hold the mount plate to the carb. but has anyone also cut the oval opening in the top of the airbox off to one side so that the filter sits in the fiberglass off a little to the one side instead of right in the middle of the fiberglass? maybe only an 1/8 of an inch but I need all the room I can get. thinking I need 3/4 inch of clearance and would like to keep the blister I will be putting in the cowl to a minimum. thanks
