Builder Assistance

Getting stalled and need some help.

I have most of the airframe done and am working on fiberglass canopy and doors on a RV10 with quick build wings stored on a cradle right now. Have the top fitted, just not installed yet. I find myself needing a push to work on it much these days. I'm enjoying the process still, just not working near enough hours on it.

Considering the step of hiring some assistance to get it pushed across the finish line sooner rather than later. In March of next year my schedule will free up and I'll be able to temporarily relocated me and my project for builders assistance. I've reached out to a couple of folks who advertise that service, but one simply said too busy and one didn't respond. So.....

Who does builders assistance that would be willing to talk to me about help to finish my plane? I want to get a perspective on time and cost to take this route.

Also, for those who have gone before me, I have heard it said that when I get the windshield in, I'm 1/2 way done. Is that true? Trying to gauge how far along I am. (Canopy fitted and working on door locking mechanisms right now).

Any advice or insight would be appreciated. Here's a couple of pics showing current state of build....

"...Also, for those who have gone before me, I have heard it said that when I get the windshield in, I'm 1/2 way done..."

I am not sure about that...it seems the last 10% takes 90% of the time.

I am at 2200+ hours build time and still not flying. Currently working on wiring and looking forward to my avionics delivery from SteinAir.

The FWF will definitely eat up some time as will the wheels and gear leg fairings.

I found that the early part of the build seemed really productive; you work for several hours and you SEE some part of an airplane come together.

The later part of the build is different. It seems you work for hours and hours and get tasks done but nothing seems to change...somewhat frustrating...

Since you have a QB, you?ll want to be sure you stay within the 51% rule. I believe (but check!) that you can farm out avionics/panel work without it counting against the time.

Suggest you contact Synergy Air ( https://synergyair.com/ ) as a possible provider of builder assistance. I believe they work with you, rather than doing the work themselves, which may make a difference regarding how it is treated with regard to the 51% rule.

As for your % complete, that is hard to say. However, I have had the same experience as Bob, in that the FWF and Finishing work takes a lot of time to accomplish small progress, unlike the work on the empennage where a little work results in very visible progress.

Keep after it, and you'll get it done eventually. I'm currently at 2626 hrs., and I think I now can see the end. I will say that quite a few of those hours have been all the avionics work, since I didn't have my panel done by Stein or Aerotronics.

I do all of my own work - wiring, panel, engine, paint, etc I put the windows in after all of the panel mechanical work was done, as was rear wiring and the bulk of the top and door fairing (i.e. about half of the filler work) and door fully fitted and rigged. I did this late spring, which was about 2/3's of the way through my build and that includes painting the plane and overhauling the engine.

Hope that helps. I start painting next week and hope to be flying by late October. Still have more FWF work to do, as I don't have enough room in the garage to paint with the engine on, so it's coming off in a couple of days.

Suggest you paint the interior before affixing the top on.

Larry

I would assume most builders go through the same thought of feeling stagnant, or wanting to hire someone in. I know I did, several times. Instead I just hammered away and only built when I really felt like building. If I became overly frustrated I walked away. I never imposed a timeline or anything that would cause me angst.

In the end it flies and looks great. However even after 6 months of flying I'm still tweaking with it.
