1 (800) WX-BRIEF question

Hey.
Quick question:
I use 1(800)WX-BRIEF routinely as a primary source of weather info and also to file flight plans. I'm a college student. I go to college in a different state than my home state. My cell phone has the area code of my home state, and when I dial 1(800)WX-BRIEF, it directs me to a briefer at RDU, rather than a briefer at my local hub. Is there a way to circumvent this problem?

This doesn't look very authoritative, but this page lists local toll free FSS numbers.

Are you having a problem? What is it?

Back in the old days when briefers really knew a local area and could look out the window there may have been some advantage of having a briefer from your area, but I would be surprised if that is the case today. The briefings are highly computerized and any briefer can get the information for any area.

When I was a briefer in Utah I used to occasionally get a call from a local pilot who happened to be on the east coast. They would call our facility because they knew us and because we weren't as busy. The briefing would take a few minutes longer because we had to study up on the fly, but even with fax charts and rickety teletypes, we could do the job.

True, but if I get a briefer in a different region, he's spent all day familiarizing himself with the weather in his area, and it's obvious to me when I talk to him that he's not as familiar with the weather way over where I am as with the local weather. I also feel like I'm the only d-bag who calls Raleigh every friday afternoon like clockwork to ask about the weather in Nashville.

It's not that the RDU briefers won't/can't give me the BNA weather, but they always think that I've got the wrong number or that I'm retarded when I call them (NC) from TN to ask about weather in TN. And since I'm permanently installed in TN, it has been kindly suggested to me by a couple of different NC briefers that I figure out how to get a TN weather briefing from a TN weather briefer.
