As a CFI I do not mind at all being kicked out of an airplane when the pilot is ready. I do; however, prefer that the aircraft be on the ground when this occurs. :)

Although a headwind is preferable, those with instrument tickets should be able to accept a 5-7 knot tailwind landing on a suitable IFR runway...

All of the above is good advice. However, in the original post you mentioned "the gauges". Did you confirm visually an uneven fuel flow by looking in the tanks? Gauges can lie.

While you are there, perhaps put a little torque stripe on the mixture arm lock nuts, and on the rod end lock nut. It makes for a quick visual check that nothing has come loose.
